Modern Slavery Statement — Gardeners Hornsey
Gardeners Hornsey is committed to preventing modern slavery and human trafficking in all forms across our operations and supply chain. This Modern Slavery Statement sets out the policies, processes and expectations we apply to protect people from exploitation. Our commitment is clear: we operate a zero-tolerance policy towards forced labour, child labour and any form of modern slavery. As the Gardeners of Hornsey, we recognise our responsibility to act with integrity and to ensure fair, safe working conditions for everyone connected to our services.
We apply robust due diligence and risk assessment when engaging contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers. Our procurement approach for Hornsey gardening services includes contractual clauses that require compliance with anti-slavery laws and standards, and we evaluate supplier risks based on geography, labour intensity and industry factors. Gardeners-Hornsey expects partners to demonstrate clear policies on wages, working hours and freedom of movement. Non-compliance is treated seriously and may result in suspension or termination of contracts.
Our policies are enforced through supplier audits and regular checks. We undertake pre-engagement screening and ongoing audits focused on recruitment practices, identity checks, accommodation and workplace conditions. Audits combine documentary review and on-site visits where practical, and findings are escalated to senior management. We work with suppliers to remediate issues, and where remediation is not possible we will exercise our right to end relationships to uphold our zero-tolerance stance.
We maintain clear reporting channels so concerns can be raised confidentially and without fear of retaliation. Employees, subcontractors and third parties are encouraged to report suspected exploitation via our internal whistleblowing processes and through designated reporting routes outlined in our policies. Reports are investigated promptly and sensitively. Gardeners Hornsey Ltd ensures protection measures are in place for whistleblowers and for any victims identified during investigations.
Training and awareness are central to our compliance programme. Staff and managers receive periodic training on recognising signs of modern slavery, how to report concerns and how to support affected individuals. The training for Gardeners of Hornsey operational teams includes scenario-based learning and clear escalation pathways. We also provide guidance to suppliers to help them meet our standards and to strengthen responsible recruitment practices.
Our governance framework assigns accountability at Board and senior leadership levels. Responsibilities include policy oversight, audit review and remediation monitoring. We publish progress annually and maintain records of assessments, audits and corrective actions. To support continuous improvement we monitor key performance indicators, such as the number of supplier audits completed, remediation cases resolved and training completion rates.
We set out specific expectations for suppliers and contractors, including:
- Clear employment contracts and lawful recruitment practices
- Transparent wage and overtime records
- Freedom for workers to terminate employment and access identity documents
We operate a structured remediation process when issues are identified. Remediation focuses on the welfare and immediate protection of any affected person, remediation of the breach and ensuring non-recurrence through corrective action plans. Where appropriate, we collaborate with external experts and NGOs to provide support and safe referral for victims. Our approach is victim-centred and aims to restore safety and dignity.
